Australian broadcaster SBS has confirmed that Australia will join the Junior Eurovision Song Contest for the first time!

The debut comes after the nation down under participated in the 60th Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna as a special anniversary guest.

A total of 17

The addition of Australia brings the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2015 participation count to 17, the highest since 2007. However, Croatia, Cyprus, and Sweden are no-shows, after having participated last year in Malta. The contest will thus be without Nordic and Baltic countries.

Welcoming newcomers

While the term “special anniversary guest” was used to justify the addition of Australia to the Eurovision Song Contest, the explanation is more vague for the junior edition.

“With #discover as the slogan for this year’s contest, we are also thrilled to welcome newcomers Ireland and Australia. Australia is continuing its journey after the tremendous success of Guy Sebastian at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna earlier this year and is now supporting the future talent of their country. Junior Eurovision has always strived for inclusion and collaboration – having Australia as part of our event shows their commitment to celebrating young and future singing talent and we welcome them to our enthusiastic and growing international group of performers, delegates, media and team members,” said Vladislav Yakovlev, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest supervisor to junioreurovision.tv.
