When the big, Australian segment airs as the interval act of the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, it will be the Australian singer Jessica Mauboy who will represent the country down under!

This was announced by the EBU and the Australian broadcaster SBS today.

Australia takes over

Earlier it was announced that SBS would take control of the interval act for the second semi-final, getting to produce the entertainment and let the Eurovision-happy country take on a bigger role than ever before.

The contest has been broadcast on a time delay in Australia since 1974 and is more popular than ever. Last year, Swedish broadcaster SVT went on a trip to Australia and produced a clip of the Australian Eurovision fans, but this year, the country will go all the way to the stage.

”Australia is going to take part in the second Semi-Final. They have asked several times if they can take part, because they love the Eurovision Song Contest so much. So this year we have given them permission to take to the stage and show us what they can do,” said Mikkel Bech to, who is this year’s content editor.

Jessica Mauboy is the Australian representative

Besides getting to display Australia and what Eurovision means to the country, Australian singer Jessica Mauboy will take the stage and represent her country.

Jessica Mauboy, who is half Indonesian and half indigenous Australian, first rose to fame in 2006 when she came second in the Australian Idol. She has since made the Australian top 10 six times, with one platinum-selling album and two gold, and will now be the country’s very first Eurovision “entry.”

Over the years, Jessica has collaborated with artists such as Flo Rida, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, and Jay Sean.

The second semi-final airs May 8, 2014.
