Formed in 2009 in a charity workshop for the developmentally disabled, the members of Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät are Peertti Kurikka, Kari Aalto, Sami Helle, and Toni Välitalo. PKN are a punk rock band. What makes PKN unique is that each of the members of the group has Down ’s syndrome.
Their first song “Kallioon!” was used in a Finnish film entitled Vähän Kunnioitusta, about a young girl with learning disabilities. Soon after, the song became a hit in Finland.In 2012, PKN were the main subject of documentary, The Punk Syndrome. The documentary earned a Scandinavian and German following for the band.
In 2014, PKN performed at a charity concert with Finnish Eurovision winner, Mr. Lordi.
In order to raise awareness for people with Down ’s syndrome, PKN entered their song “Aina mun pitää” into the Finnish selection for Eurovision 2015, UMK. On February 7, PKN competed in the first semi final of UMK.They advanced to the final on February 28. There, competing against nine other acts, PKN received 36.2% of the public vote and were declared the winners of the ticket to Vienna. PKN will represent Finland at Eurovision 2015 in May.
