Maria Elena was born in Cyprus in 1984. At age twelve, Maria Elena won the 1996 child singer of Cyprus competition. As an adult, Maria Elena moved to Greece to study philosophy at University of Ioannina. She received her degree in 2006 and began work as a professor.
In 2014, at the age of twenty-nine, Maria Elena entered The Voice Of Greece.Mentored by Despina Vandi, Maria Elena went on to win the competition. She then signed a contract with Universal Music Greece and released her first single, “Dio Egoismoi.”
Maria Elena is one of four children. One of her siblings is Cypriot footballer Kyriacos Pavlou. Maria Elena has three sons with her ex husband, sports journalist Gregoris Gregoriou.
In February 2015, Maria Elena was announced as one of the five acts competing in Greece’s Eurosong 2015. As the only ballad of the five competing entries, Maria Elena’s song “One Last Breath” stood out among the competition.On March 4, after a public vote, Eurovision 2005 winner, Helena Paparizou, announced Maria Elena as the winner of Eurosong 2015, and the act that will represent Greece in Vienna in May.
