In 2009, Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Gnoble were among the artists competing in RAI’s singing competition, Ti lascio una canzone. Director and creator of the show, Roberto Cenci had the idea to put Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca together in a group similar to the Three Tenors. They were shortly after signed to a record company. The group was initially called I Tre Tenorini, but their name was later changed to The Tryo, and in 2010, Il Volo.
In 2010, Il Volo released their self-titled debut album. As part as promotion for the album, Il Volo performed on American Idol, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Good Morning America. The album topped the Classical Albums chart in America.
Il Volo released their second album “We Are Love” in 2013. The album included songs written by Diane Warren. In the following year, Il Volo received two nominations at the Latin Grammys.
Il Volo have toured all over Europe and America and were special guest performers at Barbra Streisand’s 2012 world tour. Il Volo have made several television appearances on American television, including a cameo appearance in Entourage.
In September, RAI revealed that the Italian representative for Eurovision 2015 would be chosen from the competing artists at Sanremo Music Festival 2015. In December, Il Volo were announced as one of the twenty competing acts.
On February 14, Il Volo performed “Grande Amore” at Sanremo and were chosen from the twenty acts to progress to the superfinal along with two other acts. Il Volo were then chosen as the winners of the “Big Artists” category. As the winners of this category, Il Volo were then given the offer to represent Italy in Vienna, which they accepted.
It was later confirmed that “Grande Amore” will be the song that Il Volo will perform at Eurovision 2015.
