Mélanie was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1990. She is of Mauritian origin. Mélanie learned to play the piano and started composing songs by age nine.
She studied at a music school for young artists for six years, where she learned about singing, dancing, theatre, piano and music theory.
Mélanie has competed at several competitions including the Georges Gregoriu International Festival in Braila, Romania, where she came in 1st place, singing her own composition, “Il chante aves les anges”.In 2010, Mélanie travelled to the UK to study music at the Academy of Contemporary Music and The Brighton Institute of Modern Music. At this time Mélanie formed the band, French Konnection, which later became The Motherfunkers. As part of this band, and other, Mélanie has performed in various pubs throughout the UK.
Mélanie is currently working on her debut EP, which is scheduled for release in 2015.
Mélanie submitted her song “Time to Shine” to Switzerland’s French language broadcaster, RTS in late 2014. Mélanie was one of ten acts invited to perform her song on a live radio show on November 23. She was chosen to participate in the Swiss national selection.The Swiss final took place on January 31. Mélanie sang “Time to Shine” and a cover of Sia’s “Chandelier”. After the performances, a 50 per cent public vote and a 50 per cent jury vote took place and Mélanie was chosen as the winner. She will represent Switzerland at Eurovision 2015 in Vienna.
