Eurovision and Melodifestivalen dominated Swedish TV in 2013

Eurovision and Melodifestivalen dominated Swedish TV in 2013

Sweden, land of ABBA, Carola and Loreen, is not known as Eurovision country for nothing.

For the 2013 television season, Eurovision and especially the national selection Melodifestivalen absolutely destroyed the competition.

7 out of 10

In fact, in the top 10 of the most-watched shows of 2013, just three were not Eurovision or Melodifestivalen. Namely, the annual traditional airing of the Disney Christmas Show “From All Of Us To All Of You” on Christmas Eve, the final of the popular show På Spåret, and the final of the hockey world cup between Sweden and Switzerland.

The Swedes are particularly crazy about Melodifestivalen. The final, surprisingly won by Robin Stjernberg, had the largest TV-audience by far with 4,129,000 viewers. This was close to the record set by the final in 2006 when 4,242,000 watched Carola win. Sweden has a population of 9.5 million.

“We managed to make the programs go together in a very good way. The hosts are important as they are the common thread. We are incredibly happy that we succeeded in creating a great show,” said Melodifestivalen project manager Maria Ilstedt to According to her, the 2014 version will contain even more comedy: “We are going more in the comedy direction. We will make six very good TV-shows.”

Melodifestivalen more popular than Eurovision

Even though being held on home soil in Malmö, the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 was beaten by all semi-finals of Melodifestivalen and narrowly got more viewers than the second chance show, which is usually the lowest rated of the Melodifestivalen shows. The two Eurovision semi-finals did not make it into the top 20.

The Melodifestivalen 2013 album was also the most played album on Swedish Spotify in 2013.
