Greek national broadcaster ERT relaunched today!
Back in 2013, the Greek government decided to shut down the national broadcaster of Greece; ERT, to save costs.
Instead, a new and smaller broadcaster named NERIT was created in May 2014 to fill the void, but the situation created a big polarization in Greece.
A new government with a different view
At the January 2015 elections, the Greeks decided on a new direction for their country by electing a new government. As opposed to the previous government, the newly elected officials disagreed with the decision to shut down ERT.
In May 2015, a new round of discussions had begun about the future of the broadcaster. While not everyone supported shutting down NERIT to resurrect ERT, it was decided that ERT should be relaunched today, June 11!
Eurovision participation appears unaffected
It appears that the Greek participation for Eurovision 2016 will not be affected by these changes. Eurovision.tv has updated the broadcaster from NERIT to ERT.
In addition. during this entire time, ERT has kept updating their facebook page about Eurovision. Members discussed with citizens about the format of the national preselection and it seems as if they are thinking about hosting a marathon of shows like Melodifestivalen, though it is still too early to know the plans of the relaunched national broadcaster.
ERT is now back on the air broadcasting on ERT1, ERT2, ERT3, and ERTHD for ERT1.
