Interview with Dutch Eurovision star Trijntje Oosterhuis!
Internally-selected by Dutch broadcaster AvroTros, Trijntje Oosterhuis will be representing The Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015!
Her song “Walk Along” was created by 2013 Eurovision representative Anouk and Swedish songwriter Tobias Karlsson.
Hi, Trijntje! Thank you for taking the time to speak with us!
First off, how did it make you feel when you were approached to represent The Netherlands at Eurovision?
Very happy and proud that I get to represent my country.
“I will give the best I can”
Do you feel any particular pressure in representing The Netherlands at Eurovision?
No, I don’t feel pressure. Of course Anouk and the Common Linnets did such a great job and I’m very proud of them. But I try not to compare myself with them and I will give the best I can.
You will sing “Walk Along” in Vienna. What is it about and what was the inspiration?
There are many ways to interpret the lyrics. I leave it up to audience what it means for them. For me the song is fresh, honest and a positive love song.
Anouk was one of the co-writers of “Walk Along.” How does it make you feel that your friend is involved in your Eurovision entry only two years after she had a successful result herself?
Anouk is a great singer but also an amazing songwriter. There are so many hidden treasures in her library. We have a musical connection that worked out before and this was a great opportunity for us to work together again. She shared her experiences of the contest with me. We had fun talking about it and it gave me inspiration to also do it. She has written my previous album as well and I have much faith in our collaboration.
“I know this will bring out the best in me”
You have been a very successful artist spanning decades – how do you think those experiences influence and help your Eurovision bid?
From experience I can say that the more positive energy people give during the performance, the better I feel and the better I can perform. It is such a great event with so many people watching with all this great energy, and I know this will bring out the best in me.
Are you planning any promotion or touring before Eurovision?
In the Netherlands we have a lot of fun things coming up, where I will perform the song. I already get good responses from the audience here and you can see that this song really brings people together. Everywhere we go people sing along with ‘Walk Along’ and that’s a truly joyful experience.
What do you hope people will remember you for once Eurovision is over?
Hopefully people will remember a positive contribution to the Eurovision event.
This is the 60th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, are you a fan and if so how long have you watched?
I remember when I was a little child I already really enjoyed watching the show.
“I was thirteen and very impressed by
her performance at such a young age”
Do you have any favorite Eurovision songs?
Sandra Kim with J’aime la Vie in 1986. I was thirteen and very impressed by her performance at such a young age. Also Johnny Logan is a favorite of mine. And of course I always supported my friends and colleagues from the Netherlands who joined the contest before, for example Edsilia Rombley and Glennis Grace.
Have you ever visited Vienna?
Yes I’ve been in Vienna a couple of times when I was on tour with Candy Dulfer as a background singer. I love Vienna, it’s truly a beautiful city.
What is a recent movie, play, or concert you experienced that you really liked?
The concert of D’Angelo. He is unbelievable. I was enchanted by his performance
“My love for music has always been
the engine of my career”
How did you initially become a singer and what inspired you to pursue this career?
I always sang at home and I started my career when I was in my teens. At the time, I was in a band with my brother and friends. The band was called ‘Total Touch’ and turned out to be successful. My love for music has always been the engine of my career.
If you could pick anyone, who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
What music, artists, bands do you listen to yourself? Any favorites?
I listen a lot to Michael Jackson. His “Love Never Felt So Good” is on repeat in my house.
If you weren’t a professional singer, what do you think you would be working with?
I don’t know, be a fulltime mom? I love raising my children.
Besides music, what keeps you happy and motivated in life?
What accomplishment are you the most proud of?
Working together with Burt Bacharach was a dream. He even wrote songs and special arrangements for me, which was such a big honor. I also had a lot of great opportunities to perform with great artists like Andrea Bocelli, Herbie Hancock, Lionel Richie, Coolio, Ivan Lins, Incognito, Khaled, Salomon Burke, Candy Dulfer, Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans, Bobby McFerrin and Ronan Keating. I’m so grateful I got the chance to share music on stage with these inspiring people.
