Interview with Tanja: "I just felt with my heart that it was about time"
With three weeks before the rehearsals begin for Eurovision 2014, ESC Reporter had the opportunity to speak to this year’s Estonian representative, Tanja.
In an interview, Tanja revealed more details about her entry “Amazing,” as well as her favorite Eurovision songs from the past.
Thank you for speaking with us, Tanja!
You have competed in Eesti Laul several times before. What made you come back and try this year?
I just felt with my heart that it was about time, so we wrote a good song and it got selected.
After winning Eesti Laul, do you feel any pressure to do well for Estonia in Eurovision?
Of course I feel pressure, who wouldn’t want to make their country proud. But I’m also feeling the support of my country, this means they believe in me. It is a great honour and an amazing ;) feeling.
“It’s like an amazing lie
where you can be whoever you want to be”
Your song is called “Amazing.” What is it about and what was its inspiration?
It’s a song about my magical connection with dreams. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and in the middle of some very nice dream and I usually want to see how it ends, so I go back to sleep and I see the same dream. :) It’s like an amazing lie where you can be whoever you want to be and do what you desire to do…
You co-created the song with Timo Vendt. How did you come to work with him?
I’ve known Timo for 10 years now; we’ve done a lot of stuff together. We also wrote all the songs for my album “Gemini” and Timo produced them all. He’s a loyal friend, a great sound engineer, and a brilliant musician. We’re like an old married couple, who have good and bad arguments.
Who is the dancer with you on stage? How did you come to work with him?
His name is Argo Liik. We met in 2006 in the musical “Fame” where I played Carmen and he was one of the dancers. In one song we were partners, we had a very difficult and complicated dance but he was so easy to dance with. After “Fame” we have done a lot of projects together. I can always count on him – he is very conscientious, fun, and nice to work with.
Are you planning on making changes to your performance for Eurovision?
We’re having some small changes, but I cannot talk about them. :)
Will you have a promotional tour in Europe before Eurovision?
I believe that pre-contest promotion tour is very good for the contest success and I would love to have one as well, but unfortunately there is no time because the schedule is booked with my day-to-day performances – it’s insane.
“Every year I find some songs that I really, really like
and listen a lot”
Do you have any favorite Eurovision songs from years past?
My all-time favorite is “Nocturne” by Secret Garden and of course “Euphoria” by the magical Loreen. And every year I find some songs that I really, really like and listen a lot, like “Just a Little Bit” by Gina G or “I Feed You My Love” by Margaret Berger.
Have you ever been to Copenhagen?
No, unfortunately I haven’t been to Copenhagen yet, but I’m very excited and can’t wait to go.
If you could choose a different career path, which would you choose?
I would probably be a dance teacher and a choreographer.
Have you heard any of the other Eurovision songs this year? Which do you like?
Yes, I have heard Hungary’s song and I really like it.
Do you have a special message for ESCReporter.com?
Be amazing :)
Thank you again for your time, Tanja! See you in Copenhagen!
Tanja will perform 3rd in Semi-Final 1 on May 6 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
