Belgian pop star and 2006 Belgian representative in the Eurovision Song Contest, Kate Ryan, has released a new single called “Runaway,” along with a video for the song.
A surprising fail
Born Katrien Verbeek, Kate Ryan surprisingly failed to qualify for the Grand Final of Eurovision 2006 with her song “Je T’adore,” finishing a disappointing 12th in the semi-final, despite being widely fancied to win the final in Athens.
Since competing in Eurovision in 2006, Kate Ryan has released three studio albums: Alive (2006), Free (2008), and Electroshock (2012), as well as several non-album singles, “Runaway” being the newest one.
A song about homophobia and bullying
The new single is a return to covers for Kate, which she has had great success with in the past, with hit singles such as “Désenchantée,” “Libertine,” “Ella Elle L’a,” and “Voyage Voyage.” “Runaway” is a cover of Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy,” a song about homophobia and bullying in the 1980’s UK.
Take a listen to Runaway!
