Once again, the Melodifestivalen selection show for Sweden will tour around the country in the winter of 2014, in the search for the Swedish representative for Copenhagen.

The dates and venues for the shows were released by Swedish national broadcaster SVT today.

Malmö kicks it off

The tour will start off on February 1st in the host city and venue of Eurovision Song Contest 2013; Malmö and Malmö Arena. Last year, the city got to host the big contest and now it will kick off Sweden’s biggest TV-show for the first time. “Starting in Malmö is extra cool since ESC2013 happened there,” says the project manager for Melodifestivalen 2014, Maria Ilstedt.

Friends Arena hosts the final

The tour will continue in Linköping, Göteborg, and Örnsköldsvik for the next 3 semi-finals and a new city is introduced for the Andra Chansen show: Lidköping. This achieves a great geographical spread of the shows; the ambition of SVT to include the entire country.

Like last year, the tour will end at the massive Friends Arena. It will be split in half and welcome approximately 27,000 fans on March 8, which is about double of the Globe Arena used to host. “It’s exciting for us as a production to work with the large format,” says Ilstedt.

When the final was held at Friends Arena last year, it had only just been completed. Now the project manager hopes for more routine from the arena staff. “The arena was very new when we were there in March and we want to work a little more on our cooperation. It was the first time they had a production of this scale. The staff has had many big events after us and gained routine.”

The shows will air as follows:

  • Semi-Final 1:  February 1, Malmö, Malmö Arena
  • Semi-Final 2:  February 8, Linköping, Cloetta Center
  • Semi-Final 3:  February 15, Göteborg, Scandinavium
  • Semi-Final 4:  February 22, Örnsköldsvik, Fjällräven Center
  • Second Chance:  March 1, Lidköping, Sparbanken Lidköping Arena
  • Final:  March 8, Stockholm, Friends Arena

Song submission open

The song submission for Melodifestivalen 2014 is open until September 18, and SVT encourages everybody to send in their work. A guide can be found on the Melodifestivalen website. A jury will select 15 songs for the show, another 16 will be specially invited by SVT.
