Melodifestivalen 2014 line-up rumors full of stars

Melodifestivalen 2014 line-up rumors full of stars
  • On November 9, 2013

While the names of the participants for the 2014 edition of Melodifestivalen aren’t expected to be revealed until later this month, the Swedish tabloid media is, as every year, full of rumors about who will compete in the big show.

Melodifestivalen is the most-watched TV-show in Sweden and the biggest national final show in Europe. Since 2002, the show has traveled around Sweden with 4 semi-finals, a second chance show, and a big final in the capital Stockholm. While the shows are on-going, the participating songs dominate the Swedish charts and the shows are heavily covered in the media.

Former Eurovision winner to come back for Sweden

For 2014, the rumor list is full of familiar names. Perhaps the biggest name being mentioned is the 2005 Eurovision winner Helena Paparizou. Having competed for Greece twice, in 2001 in the duo Antique and in 2005 as a solo artist, 2014 would mark the debut in Melodifestivalen for Paparizou, who was born and raised in Sweden to Greek parents. According to Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, she will compete with an up-tempo and catchy song created by Melodifestivalen heavyweights Bobby Ljunggren and Henrik Wikström, with Sharon Vaughn.

Ljunggren has been behind such Melodifestivalen entries as Sanna Nielsen’s “Empty Room” and “I’m in Love,” Charlotte Perrelli’s “Hero,” Alcazar’s “Not a Sinner, Nor a Saint,” and Anna Bergendahl’s “It’s My Life.” Wikström has been behind entries such as Army of Lovers’ “Rockin’ the Ride,” Sofia’s “Alla,” and Måns Zelmerlöw’s “Cara Mia” and “Hope & Glory.” In a collaborative effort they have together been behind entries such as Carola’s “Invincible,” Sanna Nielsen’s “Vågar Du, Vågar Jag,” BWO’s “Lay Your Love On Me,” and Shirley’s Angels’ “I Thought It Was Forever.”

The 2013 Melodifestivalen winner – according to the people

Also as good as confirmed, according to Swedish tabloid Expressen, is Yohio, who came second to Robin Stjernberg in this year’s Melodifestivalen. Having won the televote in the final and only lost the ticket to Malmö because of the international jury, Yohio was the most expected performer to return to the show. He will reportedly be back with a song by Andreas Johnson, who himself has competed in Melodifestivalen several times.

Many other familiar faces

The rumors continue with the sources of Aftonbladet and Expressen agreeing on Dr. Alban, Martin Stenmarck, Sanna Nielsen, Linda Bengtzing, Oscar Zia, Panetoz, J.E.M., CajsaStina Åkerström, and Eko taking part. Oscar Zia and Sanna Nielsen are supposed to get Fredrik Kempe songs, J.E.M. a song by Euphoria writers Thomas G:Son and Peter Boström, and Martin Stenmarck a song by just Peter Boström.

Additionally, Expressen claims that the Judit twins, of Swedish communications company Comhem commercial fame, are in the contest next year. Aftonbladet claims that Elisa Lindström, Outrigger, Josef Johansson, and Alvaro Estrella are taking part. They also claim that Dr. Alban will be joined by two-time Melodifestivalen performer Jessica Folcker, as a featured artist.

Melodifestivalen 2014 will kick off on February 2, starting in Malmö. The show will continue to Linköping, Göteborg, Örnsköldsvik and Lidköping, before the final takes place in the Friends Arena in Stockholm on March 8.
