After it was decided back in September that the holding of the Opening Ceremony and Red Carpet would be at St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv, it is now clear that no events will be held at the historical religious site.

“There won’t be any official events of Eurovision 2017 in the territory of St. Sophia’s Square,” said Alexey Resnikov, deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration.

“Today St. Sophia’s of Kyiv works as a museum, not a church. So religious feelings won’t be insulted,” said Reznikov.

There was previously a controversy surrounding the holding of events at St. Sophia’s.

The Opening Ceremony will be most likely be near the Mariyinsky Palace.
