After a week of rehearsals, today saw the first dress rehearsal of semi-final 1, the first time that the show was rehearsed in its full length!

Unlike previous years, the arena was nearly at full capacity with excited Eurovision fans.

The opening

The show of course opens with last year’s Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst, who not only sings her winning song Rise Like a Phoenix, but also welcomes the¬†viewers to Vienna and the contestants to the stage. All artists walk through the audience and to the stage after being announced by Conchita. The opening also uses the kinetic sculpture,¬†which creates a very interesting and striking effect. Once all artists get to the stage, hosts Mirjam Weichselbraun, Alice Tumler, and Arabella Kiesbauer walk onto the stage.

The show

The show starts with Moldova and runs through the 16 songs, ending with Georgia. Each song is introduced with a short live shot of the upcoming contestant and then leads into the postcard, before the song starts.

The qualifiers

Following the 16 songs, the hosts introduce a recap of the songs and open the voting. While there was no actual interval act, the audience is entertained with a few videos. One shows the hosts’ pets running through Vienna showing different sights. Like last year in Denmark, interesting Eurovision fact videos are played, now focusing on Austria. Conchita also interviews artists in the green room. For the calling of the qualifiers, quite a few hiccups occurred, but that is to be expected in this first full run-through.
