Two Rounds To the Top
The show consisted of two rounds, the first where the artists would perform the song they entered with, and a second round where the artist would perform a cover.
Canadian Rykka Wins
Rykka, born in Vancouver, BC, Canada, won the evening with the highest amount points which was a 50/50 mix from a jury and the public. Her song “The Last of Our Kind” will go on to represent Switzerland in Stockholm.
Rykka‘s cover song in the second round was “Love Me Like You Do” originally sung by Ellie Goulding.
Who is Rykka
Twenty-nine-year-old Rykka was born as Christina Maria Rieder and attended music school growing up. She has a few albums under her belt and has performed on television both in Canada and Switzerland.
Another Canadian Another Victory?
The last time Switzerland used a Canadian born artist, it led to a victory at Eurovision for the country. This was back in 1988 when Celine Dion with her song “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi” took the crown. However, unlike Celine, Rykka does have a Swiss background as one of her grandfathers hails from the country of chocolate and watches.
